Tips for Keeping Toddlers Safe

Drowning prevention is mostly common sense. Follow these water safety tips to protect your toddlers from the dangers of drowning.

  1. Never leave a toddler alone near a pool, spa, bath tub, toilet, bucket or any standing water in which a child’s nose or mouth may be submerged.
  2. f you leave the pool area, always take your child with you.
  3. Drain any object containing water immediately after use and turn anything that can hold rain water upside down or store away from toddlers (buckets, tubs, inflatable pools, etc.)
  4. Put your child safety locks on anything that might be a danger to your child (toilets, cabinets, etc.)
  5. Use barriers around home pools and hot tubs.
  6. Always supervise your toddlers when they are in or around the water.
  7. Remember, supervision is the best protection, take proper precautions to make sure your home is child-friendly and free from the hazards related to drowning.
  8. Enroll your toddler in swim lessons and make sure they understand the rules of the water. Lessons at the YMCA are offered for children as young as 6 months.
